Our first night...

Red Rocks Pizzeria-Columbia Heights

This was our first night photographing the food and taking real notes (for brand new blog!)...but everything was nice.  This neighborhood pizzeria is a couple blocks from the center of Columbia Heights in Washington DC.  Ambience is a definite 10-cozy, warm lighting, candles on tables, brick exposed walls decorated with old photos simply framed, cozy seating arrangements, outdoor and upstairs seating options.  We had no expectations, so this was a pleasant surprise, this place.  Great beer options, pizzas are woodfired, pepperoni, our standard pizza option with which to judge was amazing, often double stacked 1 or so inch round slices, a bit burnt...mmmm. We were without guests tonight, so....we came up with a blogging idea, as we've been throwing this idea around for the 3 years we've eaten pizza on thursday nights around the DC metropolitan area, doing our own judgements, giving ourselves a "night out" to spend with our mother/grandmother who moved down to DC 3 years ago.  Sadly, this pleasant and kind soul was placed into a nursing home in Pennsylvania in early 2009, a 6 hour drive away.  So, in rememberance of her and all the nights we'd eaten pizza together with her and in exploration of new pizza places, always looking for our favorite, as well as reflecting on the disease she has, alzheimers, we are trying to create a forum for this, for her, for us.
